Volcanic Ash Moves into Spain and Portugal

Posted by:

A fresh volcanic eruption in Iceland closed airports in Spain on Saturday, and forced transatlantic flights to reroute as the ash cloud rose into some of the region’s most crowded airspace.

Eurocontrol, the pan-European air traffic control agency, said transatlantic flights faced “substantial delays” as controllers sought to reroute traffic around a thin line of ash stretching south from Iceland to Portugal, with the potential to drift as far east as Barcelona and Marseilles.

Spain closed 16 airports and restrictions are expected to remain in place until at least 6:00 p.m. local time, according to Aena, the country’s airport authority.
